Ocean Waste Management Project
Ocean waste management project targets to maintain marine resource abundance, by the management of household waste and the creation of model community in waste segregation and waste reuse and recycling. Activities were organized to raise awareness in waste management, including the installation of booms in canals; awareness raising in marine resource preservation through the collection of beach and ocean trash by volunteering employees and the general public, a campaign to commemorate important days like the World Oceans Day and the International Coastal Clean Up Day, as well as the building of community networks and marine youth conservationists. The activities were carried out in 9 provinces around the Gulf of Thailand namely Songkhla, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Surat Thani, Chumphon, Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan and Rayong and in Malaysia.
In 2023, more than 3,000 people from communities and local agencies have participated in the activities. The working committee ably managed the project in terms of budgeting, accounting and coordination. It was also successful in winning community members' participation through monthly activities, which raised awareness in environmental responsibility and cooperation in waste sorting. The result was a model community in waste sorting, reuse and recycling.
To date, the project cleared over 71 tonnes of beach and ocean waste, returned beautiful scenery, lessened health impacts on community, and raised community income through innovative development of waste–based products like flooring and wall materials for sale to community members.
PTTEP has carried out analysis on Social Return on Investment (SROI) of this project by measuring the social impact of the program with the financial quantification calculation (monetization). This method is intended to measure the value of the financial impact of the program that compares to the value of the impact to the cost of the program that has been invested into. It appears that the value of the SROI ratio is 5.49 : 1
